Pegasus - The Winged Horse You may have seen that Brewery Road (just down the road fron the Church) has its own version of Pegasus - the winged horse of Greek mythology. It is a skilfully carved, almost life size horse, from a dead tree. It has been said that the artist Michaelangelo was able to look at a piece of marble and see an angel in it. God too looks upon us and sees not only what we are in all our weakness and sinfulness but what we can become in Christ Jesus. When the Lord Jesus Christ first met Peter the apostle He looked at him and said: "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas [Peter] (which is translated, a stone)." The Lord looked on this man, who once said to Jesus, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" and He saw what Peter would one day become in His Church. Despite his many failings and instability and yet also his endearing characteristics, such as his loyalty to the Lord Jesus and being the spokesman for the other disciples, after the Day of the Pentecost this man had a rock-like quality and became the leader of the early Church in Jerusalem. Peter fulfilled the Lord's command to him to "feed my sheep" both by word and writing until in fulfilment of the prediction of Christ he was to lay down his life for the Lord (tradition says that he was crucified upside down). What can the Lord make out of you and me? Outside of Christ we too are dead, spiritually, but when Christ takes hold of a person they become a new creation: Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5 v. 17: " Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new ." |
